Unwrapping the Gifts of Fall

Like a lot of other people, I love this time of year. ?It is a?time of indulgence for?all five of my senses. I love to see?the brilliant reds, yellows, and oranges?that take over the landscape as the leaves begin to change. ?I love to see the pumpkins resting on the porches, waiting for their?faces to be made up. For those of you who have known me for a long time, seeing the title “recipe” may seem a bit alarming. I have always been a huge fan of food. ?All kinds. ?This may seem like a weird thing to say. ?Isn’t everyone a fan of food? ?I’m not sure if everyone is, or isn’t, but what I do know…

Your Friends Will Come and Go

“Your friends will come and go, but you will always have each other.” This is something I heard often when I was younger. Whenever my younger sister and I would argue, my mom’s voice could be heard repeating these words. She would usually preface it with the importance of being kind to one another and then would end with this…

What’s Next?

What’s next? I feel like we are plagued by this question too often. ?It comes in different forms, but the?meaning is the same. What’s next? You are single. ?Are you dating anyone? Welcome

Hi there! I’m Jen, and I am so glad you are here. I write about faith, family, parenting, friendship, forgiveness, and my own struggles and joys in life (with a few recipes and decorating tips thrown in for fun). I hope my writing is like reading a letter from a friend, and that it brings you encouragement. Life is messy. We are all a little messy. Thankfully, God loves us through it all. Thank you for being here!

Not everyone is going to like me, and that’s oka Not everyone is going to like me, and that’s okay.

Not everyone is going to agree with me, and that’s okay.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the same things I do, and that’s okay.

As I have grown older, I am learning these valuable truths.

I am not going to be someone everyone likes. And I don’t have to be.

It isn’t my job to convince people to like me. Or to work hard to earn their approval.

That is wasted energy.

Should I be kind? Yes. Should I be thoughtful of others? Absolutely. Should I be respectful? You bet.

But that isn’t the same thing.

I used to spend a lot of time and energy worrying about what others thought of me. I wanted to be everyone’s friend. If someone didn’t like me, I wanted to figure out why and work to make that better.

My worth was wrapped up in other people’s opinions. In their approval.

And once I let that go, I felt more free. Free to be myself. Free to stop comparing. Free from jealousy. Free from obsessing over how to make it better.

We are each uniquely made. We all have our own gifts and talents and things God has called us to in life.

I hope and pray to spend my days seeking after Him. Loving others well. And being who He made me to be, not worrying about what I think I should be - or who someone else wants me to be.

Not everyone is going to like me, and that’s okay.

It took me a long time to be able to say that. To really believe that.

I believe one of the gifts of aging is becoming more comfortable in our own skin. Learning more about who we are. And who we are not.

And I hope the same for you, friends. That regardless of other’s opinions of you - that you know you are uniquely made and that God loves you as you are. There is only one you. There will never be another you in all of the history of time.

So let’s own it!

Because when I think of it that way, that’s pretty incredible.

And they love it and whenever I see them in it my heart is so happy.

It reminds me of Toonces the Driving Cat and makes me want to eat tacos. Basically, what I’m saying is this one of the best gifts ever.

The only thing that would make it better is if the cats really knew how to make tacos.

That would be incredible.
